Statistics compiled by De Bellas & Co. indicate that 12 staffing businesses were sold or merged in the fourth quarter of 2001. 72 staffing companies were acquired in 2001, down more than 55 percent from 2000. Firms providing specialty staffing services continued to be the most attractive in the industry, as nearly one-half of all staffing industry transactions in 2001 involved specialty staffing companies.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announces a $20 million grant competition for H-1B Technical Skills Partnership Grants. The goal of the training grants is to prepare Americans for high-skill jobs, reducing the long-term dependence on foreign labor. Funds for the technical skills training grants come from user fees paid by employers, who recruit under the H-1B visa program.
