The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had declined dramatically over the past 3 months, rebounded in December. The Index now stands at 93.7, up from 84.9 in November. The Expectations Index rose sharply, from 77.3 to 91.5, and The Present Situation Index increased slightly, from 96.2 to 96.9.
Associate Press reports that Senate Democrats are pushing a new tax credit to direct economic stimulus to workers. Proposed by Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, a corporate income tax refund (equal the 6.2 percent in payroll taxes) would be given to companies paying more Social Security payroll taxes in 2002 than they did in 2001, through new hires, raises, or increased hours.
