From the Bureau
Real gross domestic product (GDP), decreased at an annual rate of 1.3 percent in the third quarter of 2001. In the second quarter, real GDP increased 0.3 percent.

Regional and State unemployment rates were generally higher in November than in the prior month. Jobless rates rose in all four regions and in 36 States, while only 6 States posted decreases. The national jobless rate increased to 5.7 percent in November. Nonfarm employment decreased in 34 States.

Personal income decreased $5.6 billion (0.1%) and disposable personal income (DPI) decreased $0.4 billion (less than 0.1%) in November. Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) decreased $52.8 billion (0.7%).

A Federal grand jury in Tennessee indicted two corporate executives and the human resource manager, among others, of Tyson Foods Inc. on charges of conspiring to smuggle illegal aliens to the company's poultry processing plants as a way of cutting production costs. Undercover agents working for Tysons were directed by company managers to "recruit" immigrants at the U.S.-Mexican border and transport them to company processing plants. The indictment is the result of a 2 1/2-year undercover investigation by the INS. The company denied the charges.
