In the week ending November 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted unemployment initial claims was 488,000, an increase of 54,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 434,000. The 4-week moving average was 454,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's revised average of 456,000.
Real gross domestic product, the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States, decreased at an annual rate of 1.1 percent in the third quarter of 2001, according to preliminary estimates. In the second quarter, real GDP increased 0.3 percent.
New Combinations
Mellon Financial Corp. reports it will buy Unifi, a unit of consulting firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers that provides human resources consulting and outsourcing services, for approximately $275 million in an all-cash deal. Unifi, which booked $351 million in revenue in its fiscal year ended June 2001, will be combined with Mellon's employee benefit solutions business.
Workthing, a U.K-based employment network from the Guardian Media Group, has acquired PeopleBank, a provider of hosted corporate recruitment sites.
