In the third quarter, the preliminary seasonally adjusted annual rates of productivity growth were:
2.2 percent in the business sector and
2.7 percent in the nonfarm business sector.
In both sectors, productivity increases occurred because hours fell more than output.
In manufacturing, productivity increases were:
1.1 percent in manufacturing,
2.5 percent in durable goods manufacturing, and
-1.3 percent in nondurable goods manufacturing.
A change in hours of business employees was adjusted downward by 0.3 percentage point to reflect changes to labor markets following the September attacks.

The index rose by 0.8 percent for the week ending November 5. For the month of October, the index declined by nearly 7 percent from the prior month and was down 65.4 percent from the same month of the prior year. (Go to Latest Weekly Release.)
