Northern Compensation
According to the Morneau Sobeco Compensation Trends and Projections 2002 survey, although Canadian employers are bracing for a challenging market over the next 12 months, many still plan to follow through with their average salary increase of 3.3 percent for 2002. After the September attacks, 80 percent of the largest participating organizations were recontacted to see how their plans would be affected, only 18 percent stated they expected to reduce their salary increase budget for 2002 by 0.9 percentage point on average.
M & A Activity
Statistics compiled by De Bellas & Co., a specialty investment banking firm, indicate that 17 staffing businesses were sold or merged in the third quarter of 2001. Transaction activity has remained steady throughout all of 2001, as buyers continue to be selective and deliberate. However, transactions involving IT staffing companies did begin to pick up again in the third quarter. Specialty staffing companies, including those providing legal, accounting/finance, and medical staffing services, as well as PEOs, also continued to draw interest, with six such specialty firms acquired in the third quarter.
