Regional and State unemployment rates generally were stable in August. All four regions recorded small changes from July, and 43 States and the District of Columbia reported shifts of 0.3 percentage point or less. The national jobless rate rose to 4.9 percent in August. Nonfarm employment decreased in 28 States in August.
Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report
In the week ending September 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 387,000, a decrease of 49,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 436,000. The 4-week moving average was 409,000, a decrease of 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 412,250.
