Real gross domestic product increased at an annual rate of 0.2 percent in the second quarter of 2001, according to preliminary estimates. It increased 1.3 percent in the first quarter.
Corporate profits from current production decreased $28.5 billion in the second quarter. In the first quarter, profits decreased $57.8 billion. The internal funds available to corporations for investment decreased $10.7 billion in the second quarter, compared with a decrease of $35.1 billion in the first. Domestic profits of financial corporations decreased $4.6 billion in the second quarter, and the domestic profits of nonfinancial corporations decreased $21.1 billion in the second quarter.
Personal income increased $43.9 billion, or 0.5 percent, and disposable personal income (DPI) increased $127.9 billion, or 1.7 percent, in July. Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $7.1 billion, or 0.1 percent. In June, personal income increased $30.5 billion, or 0.4 percent, DPI increased $23.3 billion, or 0.3 percent, and PCE increased $33.6 billion, or 0.5 percent, based on revised estimates. Private wage and salary disbursements increased $17.6 billion in July, compared with an increase of $18.7 billion in June.

The company also entered into an agreement to acquire Skillscape, a Canada-based provider of competency management systems.
