Nonfarm payroll employment continued to decline, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.5 percent in July. Payroll employment was down by 42,000 over the month. Job losses continued in manufacturing, and employment in most other major industries showed little significant change.

Ready and Willing
The 2001 IT Market Compensation Study by people3 reveals that the average tenure for an IT professional is less than 3 years, and that more than half of IT professionals leave their employers within that time. According to the study, three factors -- the use of new technologies, offering learning and training initiatives, and providing a challenging technical environment -- ranked higher than competitive, market-based salaries as effective retention practices.

In an exclusive advance release to CNN.com/Career a new techies.com survey of 3,401 tech professionals has found 47 percent of respondents saying they're more willing to move for a new job now than they were 12 months ago.
