In June, 208 metropolitan area unemployment rates were recorded as below the U.S. average (4.7 percent, not seasonally adjusted), and 112 areas registered higher rates. Of the seven metropolitan areas with rates below 2.0 percent, four were in the Midwest, and two were in New England. Ten areas had jobless rates of 10.0 percent or more in June, including 6 in California's Central Valley and 3 along the Mexican border in other States.

The index soared by nearly 63 percent for the period ending July 30. For the month of July, the index rose by nearly 23 percent from June's level, but was still down about 21 percent from the pace set in July 2000. The strong finish to the July JLI, if it holds, may be signaling an improving labor market shortly as employers step up the hiring pace again. (Go to Latest Weekly Release.)
