Numbers from the Bureaus
In April, 223 metropolitan areas recorded unemployment rates below the U.S. average (4.2 percent, not seasonally adjusted), while 99 areas registered higher rates. Fourteen metropolitan areas had rates below 2.0 percent. Among the nine areas with jobless rates over 10.0 percent, six were in California's Central Valley and two were along the Mexican border in other States.

Nonfarm employment and the unemployment rate were little changed in May. Manufacturing had another large job loss, which was mostly offset by employment gains in other industries, including services, construction, and finance, insurance, and real estate.

Both the number of unemployed persons (6.2 million) and the unemployment rate (4.4 percent) were little changed in May. The rates for all the major worker groups--adult men (3.9 percent), adult women (3.8 percent), teenagers (13.6 percent), whites (3.8 percent), blacks (8.0 percent), and Hispanics (6.2 percent)--showed little or no change over the month.

Census tabulations find that among people age 65 years and over, 14 percent were in the civilian labor force, 55 percent were married and living with their spouse, and 9.7 percent had incomes below the poverty level.

Older men were more likely than older women to be in the civilian labor force. Among those age 65 and over, 19 percent of men and 10 percent of women were in the civilian labor force.

Among employed people age 65 and over, men were more likely than women to work in executive, administrative, and managerial occupations (19 percent compared with 12 percent). Women, on the other hand, worked more frequently in administrative support jobs than did men (28 percent compared with 6 percent). Half of all adults 65 years and over lived in the suburbs.

Census 2000 Demographic Profiles on a State-by-State basis are also available.
