Customer Service
Think about your last experience with excellent Customer Service. Is it the kind of service your company provides? Is is what you find in our Industry? Sumser reviews the concept in the Electronic Recruiting News.

From the Bureau
The employment situation indicates that during the month of March nonfarm employment fell, while the unemployment rate was little changed at 4.3 percent. A decline in nonfarm payroll employment of 86,000 reflected losses in manufacturing, help supply services, and retail trade. Employment rose in most services industries. Average hourly earnings rose by 6 cents over the month.

In February, 209 metropolitan area unemployment rates were recorded below the U.S. average (4.6 percent, not seasonally adjusted), while 117 areas registered higher rates. Nine metropolitan areas had rates below 2.0 percent, including two each in Connecticut and Virginia. Among the 11 areas with jobless rates greater than 10.0 percent, 7 were in California.

Reuters reports that Canada's jobless rate edged up to 7 percent in March from 6.9 percent in February.

Who, What, Where, and How
According to a recent joint poll, networking and personal contacts rank as the most used and most effective search tactics by both job seekers and employers. Conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management and CareerJournal.com, the poll found that 95 percent of both HR professionals and job seekers use personal contacts and networking to find job candidates or a job and both groups found it to be the most effective search tactic. Interestingly, job seekers report using more informal tactics and rate them higher in effectiveness than HR professionals. It also appears that those doing the hiring have a tendency to focus on more formal, measurable methods, rather than using less measurable methods, such as posting notices in public places (i.e., supermarkets and movie theaters) or radio/TV ads.

Another recent survey found that 85 percent of workers polled said the emphasis on business networking has increased over the last 5 years, yet only 48 percent said they feel only somewhat comfortable with this activity.
