The unemployment rate held at 4.2 percent in February, and total nonfarm employment rose by 135,000. Large job losses continued in manufacturing, where employment declined by 94,000. Employment gains in several other industries, including services, accounted for the net increase in payroll employment. Average hourly earnings rose by 7 cents over the month.
Personal income increased $48.8 billion, or 0.6 percent, and disposable personal income (DPI)increased $34.2 billion, or 0.5 percent, in January. Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $46.9 billion, or 0.7 percent. In December, personal income increased $35.4 billion, or 0.4 percent, DPI increased $28.1 billion, or 0.4 percent, and PCE increased $26.4 billion, or 0.4 percent, based on revised estimates.
Help Not Wanted
According to Work.com, Knight Ridder Inc. expects that total February advertising revenue will decline by a low single-digit percentage. February help-wanted revenue in San Jose declined by $2.5 million, reflecting the deterioration of business conditions. Knight Ridder owns The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Miami Herald, The San Jose Mercury News, and 29 other daily newspapers. Last month, The Conference Board reported that its January Help-Wanted Advertising Index closed at 76, down three points from December. Its February Index will be released later this month.
