2001 Executive Summary - Download It Today
The 2001 Electronic Recruiting Index is finally complete! Check out the 2001 Executive Summary. (You will need Adobe Acrobat to read it.)
Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment
In December, 215 metropolitan areas recorded unemployment rates below the U.S. average (3.7 percent, not seasonally adjusted), while 106 areas registered higher rates, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Forty-three metropolitan areas had rates below 2.0 percent, with 14 of these located in New England, 13 in the Midwest, 11 in the South, and 5 in the West. Of the nine metropolitan areas with jobless rates over 10.0 percent, seven were in West Coast States and two were along the Mexican border in other States.
JobOptions/BTM Job-Listing Index
The index rose sharply over the latest week ending January 29 following the turn-of-the-year holiday-depressed pace earlier in the month. For the week, the index gained nearly 35 percent from the prior week to a level that was last seen before Thanksgiving. On a year-over-year basis, the index grew by about 31 percent, which also was the strongest performance since November. For the month of January, the index declined by 10.1 percent from the prior month. (Go to Latest Weekly Release.)
The Devil Is in the Details
The Daily Labor Report from Bureau of National Affairs reports that an appeals court upheld a ruling that although a company had a clear policy against sexual harassment, a breakdown in the system hindered an employee from properly reporting the harassment, and was held liable to the tune of $25,000. The court found that the company did not have a designated person in the HR to field complaints of sexual harassment from employees. (Subscription required.)
The Buzz on Buzz
Is there any way marketing executives can harness the power of word-of-mouth promotion? According to one strategy consultant, the answer is yes. An excerpt from the Harvard Business Review dissects the big fallacy of buzz, that is, the notion that only outrageous or edgy products are buzz-worthy. (Registration required.)
