Perspective
Today John Sumser looks at the diverse reaction within the readership on a given topic in the Electronic Recruiting News.
A Bigger Picture
According to a new report from the University of Texas Center for Research in Electronic Commerce, the Internet economy directly supports 3.088 million jobs, and in the first
half of 2000 alone, 600,000 jobs were created by virtue of the Internet.
The study, commissioned by Cisco Systems, finds that 7 of every 10 of these jobs are traditional, rather than high-tech, jobs. Of the Internet-related jobs, only 28 percent are in information technology, which ranks below sales and marketing (33 percent) as the job function generating the most Internet-related employment.
The study reports that although dot.com companies are a very small part (about 9.6 percent) of the overall Internet Economy, employment in Internet economy companies is growing much faster than in the overall economy.
CNET reports on the recent Jupiter Media Metrix numbers, which show that traffic to all of the major recruitment sites has soared in recent months. JobsOnline.com was the most trafficked job site in December, with 6.6 million visitors, followed by HotJobs.com with 2.7 million visitors. Monster.com seemed to be a stickier site, however, with visitors staying on the site for an average of 22.9 minutes, in comparison with an average of 2.6 minutes at JobsOnline.com.
Help-Wanted Advertising Index
The Conference Board Help-Wanted Advertising Index closed at 79 in December, up 4 points from November. In the past 3 months, help-wanted advertising rose in five regions and fell in four. Increases occurred in the Mountain (14.4 percent), New England (8.0 percent), West North Central (5.3 percent), east North Central (4.7 percent) and Pacific (3.7 percent) regions. Steepest declines took place in the South Atlantic (-11.5 percent), west South Central (-6.8 percent) and east South Central (-5.7 percent) regions.
