The Gateways
Several companies take different approaches to job posting distribution. Take a look at the players and approaches in the Electronic Recruting News.

From the Bureau
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) declined 0.1 percent in December, before seasonal adjustment, to a level of 174.0. For the 12-month period ended in December, the CPI-U increased 3.4 percent.

The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers also declined 0.1 percent in December, prior to seasonal adjustment. The December level of 170.7 was 3.4 percent higher than the index in December 1999.

Regional Updates
Washington State's unemployment rate fell one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.9 percent in December, a month that normally posts modest increases.

The unemployment rate for California dropped to 4.6 percent in December, down from 4.8 percent in November. This is the lowest unemployment rate in the State since February 2000 when the rate was also 4.6 percent.

The Washington Post reports on a study by the Brookings Institution Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy that suggests that the Washington, D.C. area technology sector is concentrated in industries that have solid prospects for growth: telecommunications, software, biotechnology, Internet service and database production, and that the local tech economy could weather the shakeout better than most.

OSHA Compliance
SHRM clarifies the new OSHA ruling that is now in effect.

Job Satisfaction and the Environment
A just-released survey shows that job satisfaction is tied to the work space. The survey, commissioned by Gibbs College, suggests that the old mindset of a cubicle reflecting lack of job status still exists. Even with annual salaries between $50,000 and $75,000 and stock ownership, significant amounts of minimized self-esteem and discontent emerge from this working population. Cube workers are less satisfied with their workspace than their office-dwelling counterparts. At least 62 percent of employees with offices state satisfaction with their workday environments in contrast to 40 percent of cubicle workers.
