JobOptions/BTM Job-Listing Index
The index succumbed to the typical year-end hiring slump and slipped by 19.4 percent over the latest week ending January 1, 2001. But the year-over-year momentum remained healthy over the last week with a 19.0 percent gain. For December, the index declined by 9.6 percent from the November level. On an annual basis, the index grew by 23.8 percent in 2000. Although the pace was strong for 2000, as a whole, that marked the slowest annual growth since the series began in 1994. Michael P. Niemira of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi's Research Department in New York observed that, "The slower pace of growth in the online job market represented two forces in play during 2000: (1) growing maturity of the online job market, and (2) slower growth in the U.S. labor markets."
