Workers' Rights to Sue
Associated Press reports on a lawsuit that could set ground rules for when employers can force workers to settle labor disputes through arbitration rather than in court.
Balance & Ownership
Previously associated to heart disease, job stress also is linked to depression, according to a report in the November issue of the American Journal of Public Health. Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health finds that work issues, such as not having much say at work, a boss that doesn't listen (or is too reactive), and a high workload increases a condition termed job strain. Researchers found that somebody with high job strain is five times more likely to have a depressive disorder compared to someone with low job strain.
IPs and the Workplace
The Aquent 1099 Index found that in a job search 7 out of 10 independent professionals (IPs) say they find work through referrals and word of mouth, and only 2 percent said they have successfully used job boards to find work. Despite the longer hours this group tends to work, nearly 3 out of 4 IPs are more satisfied with their work/life balance compared to when they were traditional workers.
