Employment Cost Index
The Employment Cost Index (not seasonally adjusted) for September 2000 was 149.5, an increase of 4.3 percent from September 1999, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The index measures changes in compensation costs, which include wages, salaries, and employer costs for employee benefits.

Weekly Unemployment Insurance Claims
In the week ending October 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 305,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week. The 4-week moving average was 307,500, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's revised average of 303,500.

Gross Domestic Product
The Real Gross Domestic Product increased at an annual rate of 2.7 percent in the third quarter of 2000, according to advance estimates released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The 2.4-percent increase in the price index for gross domestic purchases and the 4.5-percent increased for real personal consumption expenditures are considered contributing factors.
