Weekly Unemployment Insurance Claims Report
In the week ending September 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 299,000, an increase of 10,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 289,000. The 4-week moving average was 306,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 309,000.
JobOptions/BTM Job-Listing Index
The index had a late-month surge, which contributed to its highest reading of record for the week ending October 2. The index rose by 16.7 percent from the prior week. (Go to Latest Release.)
H-1B Passes Only For Some
The U.S. House of Representatives quickly followed suit by approving the Senate version of the H-1B visa bill, increasing the number of temporary skilled foreign high-tech workers. The bill now goes to President Clinton for consideration. Yet, there are still those that disagree with the perception of a workforce shortage. In no uncertain terms, one professor contends that the high-tech industry can only blame itself for the so-called shortage of software talent.
New Recruiting Measures
One consultant suggests that traditional measures, such as cost per hire, are measures of the 20th century and poses new measures for HR to track.

PeopleSoft unveiled its Portal Solutions, portal applications that provide people with information that is relevant to their specific roles within an organization.

TechOnLine, a resource for the design engineering community, launched the Online Symposium for Electronics Engineers (OSEE), designed to transfer technical knowledge by providing free access to live interactive lectures and forums given by industry experts and working engineers over the Internet.
