The Conference Board index dropped to 78 in August, down four points from July. Last year at this time, it was 86. In the past 3 months, help-wanted advertising declined in all regions except for New England. Steepest declines were in the East North Central (-9.1 percent), Middle Atlantic (-7.4 percent), South Atlantic (-6.3 percent), and Mountain (-4.5 percent) regions.
