Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report
In the week ending September 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 308,000, a decrease of 18,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 326,000. The 4-week moving average was 315,750, a decrease of 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 319,000.
New Rulings
According to Watson Wyatt, the IRS has finalized the regulations providing lump sum cash-out guidance. The final rules allow plan sponsors to distribute involuntary cashouts to terminating employees whose benefits are worth $5,000 or less.
Two women who applied for jobs to test whether a security firm discriminated against minorities have lost their lawsuit in a key Federal case that asked whether it's legal to lie to an employer in an effort to document wrongdoing. Although The Fair Housing Act authorizes the use of discrimination testers in housing, there is no Federal law or definitive court ruling on employment testers.
