Housing Market Updates
Sales of new one-family houses in June were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 829,000 according to estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 4 (+/-9) percent below the revised May rate of 861,000 and 13 (+/-10) percent below the June 1999 rate of 948,000. The median sales price of new houses sold in June 2000 was $159,000; the mean sales price was $196,300.
National vacancy rates in the second quarter 2000 were 8.0 percent in rental housing and 1.5 percent in homeowner housing. The Census Bureau reports that neither rate changed significantly from its corresponding rate in the second quarter of 1999.
The Boston Globe reports on the skyrocketing price of houses in New Hampshire in relationship to the rise in high-tech industry.
Quarterly $$$
Barrett Business Services reports net income of $794,000. Basic and diluted earnings per share were 11 cents.
General Employment Enterprises earned $743,000, or 15 cents per diluted share. Third quarter earnings were up 34 percent from second quarter earnings of $556,000, or 11 cents per diluted share.
Hall, Kinion & Associates net revenues were $77.6 million, gross profit increased to $39.9 million, and Net income was $3.8 million, or 28 cents per diluted share.
M & A Update
Statistics compiled by De Bellas & Co. indicate that 38 staffing businesses were sold or merged in the second quarter of 2000, representing a 10-percent decrease from the first quarter of 2000. Transactions involving IT staffing and traditional (office clerical/light industrial) staffing firms have seen the most significant decline in activity.
