Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims
In the week ending July 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 272,000, a decrease of 40,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 312,000. The 4-week moving average was 299,250, a decrease of 8,750 from the previous week's revised average of 308,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending July 15, unchanged from the prior week.
Gross Domestic Product
Real gross domestic product (GDP), the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States, increased at an annual rate of 5.2 percent in the second quarter of 2000, according to advance estimates released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 4.8 percent.

The Washington Post reports on the firing of 50 employees at Dow Chemical Company for what the company considers offensive e-mail content. An additional 200 employees were disciplined. This comes on the heels of congressional legislation introduced last week, that would require employers to inform their employees once a year whether they are monitoring employee e-mail, the frequency of such monitoring, and what the employers will do with the information once collected.

With the school year rapidly approaching, one author attempts to educate recruiters about college seniors' sense of time.

Through an innovative program, AT&T employee volunteers will share their expertise and train Rocky Mountain SER clients use the Web for employment opportunities and career advice, such as interview and resume tips. Rocky Mountain SER is a statewide nonprofit providing education, employment, and training throughout Colorado.
Couldn't Pass This One Up
In California, it is now legal to apologize. Yes indeed, the governor signed a law protecting "I'm sorry" from being interpreted as an admission of guilt. The bill was aimed at lawyers who counsel their clients to avoid apologies at all costs. Doesn't that just make you shake your head …
