Boom Bust Boon

Bureau of Labor Statistics: June 2000
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.6 percent in June, before seasonal adjustment, to a level of 172.3. Statistics for the 12-month period ended in June, the index increased 3.7 percent. The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers also rose 0.6 percent in June, prior to seasonal adjustment. The June level of 169.1 was 3.9 percent higher than the index in June 1999.
Real Average Weekly Earnings grew by 0.1 percent from May to June after seasonal adjustment. This was due to a 0.4-percent increase in average hourly earnings and a 0.3-percent rise in average weekly hours. These gains were largely offset by a 0.6-percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers.
New Combinations
Knight Ridder and Tribune Company will acquire CareerBuilder.com and CareerPath.com. Under the merger agreement, a company jointly-owned and financed by Tribune and KnightRidder.com will make a cash tender offer for all outstanding shares of CareerBuilder common stock at $8.00 per share in cash. The aggregate consideration in the CareerBuilder transaction is expected to be approximately $200 million. The economic terms of the CareerPath transaction were not disclosed.
Desktop hiring site PowerHiring.com joins forces with Profiles International, an employment evaluation and testing firm.
Cooljobs.com, a destination site for unique job opportunities, has joined the WorkExchange network of co-branded partners.
TechTarget.com, creator of industry-specific search engines for IT professionals, has acquired DatabaseCentral.com, directory of database-related sites on the Web. The site, to relaunch in August, will be renamed SearchDatabase.com.
Techies.com will now offer vendor-certified, instructor-led technology training via a reverse auction. Powered by IQdestination.com, the auction allows technology professionals to set the price they are willing to pay for training classes, then training centers bid to win the students' business.
Information Works
Even though managers are expected to lead the communications campaign during a merger, few receive the training to prepare them for the role, according to a new survey from The Conference Board. The research reports that if communications go well, typically the merger does also.
Regional Updates
Pennsylvania's CareerLink system will be used as a model by Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. The agreement provides for the four States to develop a joint effort, known as the Mid Atlantic Career Consortium, to develop a core information system and distribute the workload and costs. The plan will aim to meet workforce needs of Federal, State, and local partners.
