Nitecap for the Weekend
With the editor nursing a hangover and unable to provide fresh material for today, we think it apropriate to revisit John Sumser's recent article about the continued shortages of quality employees.

Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report
In the week ending July 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 319,000, an increase of 27,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 292,000. The 4-week moving average was 305,500, an increase of 5,250 from the previous week's revised average of 300,250. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending July 1, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 1.6 percent.

The study also finds that minorities only appear on candidate short lists between 4 and 13 percent of total search assignments.

Same structure, different details …
A national AARP survey finds that although company human resource managers support a variety of effective strategies to more fully utilize older employees, few companies implement those approaches. Another study finds that 80 percent of baby boomers expect to keep working after retirement. Add to all that a study by the Society for Human Resource Management, which found that 65 percent of companies do not recruit older workers and only 45 percent attempt to retain them. A very interesting dilemma in a tight labor pool, don't you think?

Workforce reports on redefining retirement.
