Gross Domestic Product
Real gross domestic product (GDP), the output of goods and services produced by labor and property located in the United States, increased at an annual rate of 5.5 percent in the first quarter of 2000, according to revised estimates released today by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the fourth quarter, real GDP increased 7.3 percent.
TechForce 2000
An analysis of the supply and demand of the IT workforce has been released by techies.com. The findings include C++, Java, and Oracle 8/8i as being among the most in-demand technology skills; software developers, system administrators, and new media/interactive specialists as being the types of jobs in greatest need; and the Bay Area leading the nation in tech workers salaries, with New York, Chicago, Boston, and Dallas rounding out the top five.
Work Force Education
Congressionally appointed panel The 21st Century Workforce Commission issued A Nation Of Opportunity, its analysis of how leadership in regional partnerships of education, business and government can effectively address critical shortages of skilled workers in IT jobs.

Recruiter Toolbox now offers recruiting kiosks that can be stationed wherever a company does its hiring. Compaq Computer Corporation will provide hardware and partnership support. Recruiter Toolbox is a member of the Compaq/Microsoft/Intel speedStart Dot Com Program.
Hire.com launches Talent Relationship Marketing Service, designed to drive directly to recruitment sections of corporate Web sites powered by its e-Recruiter. The company reports that MarketMatch, the online recruitment service of marketing search firm MarketPro, is the first to use the service.
Medimorphus.com, a destination for healthcare recruiting and career management, is a joint effort of Comp Health and Weatherby Healthcare.
Market Indicators
Sales of existing homes rose by 4.3 percent in May and prices crept higher, according to the National Association of Realtors. May sales rose to an annual pace of 5.09 million units, up from 4.88 million in April.
In a related story, Mercury Center reports that the median price of a single-family home in the Bay Area dropped slightly in May, although homes continued to change hands at a brisk pace.
