Ouch!
John Sumser expands on yesterday's discussion on retention and attrition by considering how attrition can affect a business on the personal level.

State Updates
Michigan's seasonally adjusted May unemployment weight rose slightly to 3.2 percent, according to the Michigan Department of Career Development. Employment decreased by 12,000 in May and unemployment increased by 13,000.

The maximum weekly unemployment insurance benefit in Washington State will increase from $441 to $478 beginning July 1, according to the State Employment Security Department.

California Governor Gray Davis says a proposed multibillion-dollar array of salary boosts, tax breaks, incentives, and bonuses in the State budget will go a long way toward easing the teacher shortage, particularly in low-performing schools.

In a related story, Intel Corp. and school officials will introduce a mortgage-assistance program to help teachers buy homes in the Santa Clara Unified School District, in an effort to attract and retain public school teachers, who are caught in a middle-income housing squeeze.

Crain's Chicago Business reports that the gasoline price shock hitting Chicago will take a billion-dollar bite out of the local economy and kill more than 36,000 jobs over the coming year.

U.S. Housing and Urban Development and Export-Import Bank signed an agreement to work together to create jobs and stimulate business growth in economically distressed neighborhoods across America.

Tradeoffs for Working Mothers
A good relationship with the boss reduces the stress experienced by working mothers--but at a price. Researchers found that women who received more support at home were less stressed and their family life was less likely to interfere with work. However, those with a good relationship with their boss, found that their work life actually interfered more with their family life. In return for support and flexibility, the boss may expect a woman to work longer hours and take on tough assignments, which can create conflict with family life. The results of the study are in the June issue of the Psychology of Women Quarterly.
