Momentum
Just back from the CTO Conference in Austin, John Sumser meditates on passion, momentum, and conference host Hire.com.

From the Bureau of Labor Statistics: May
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.1 percent in May, before seasonal adjustment, to a level of 171.3. For the 12-month period ended in May, the CPI-U increased 3.1 percent. The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers also rose 0.1 percent in May, prior to seasonal adjustment. The May level of 168.1 was 3.3 percent higher than the index in May 1999.

Real average weekly earnings declined by 0.3 percent from April to May, after seasonal adjustment. This was due to a 0.3-percent decline in average weekly hours and a 0.1-percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers. These movements were partially offset by a 0.1-percent increase in average hourly earnings.

Jobs-Listing Index
The Job-Options/BTM Job-Listing Index inched higher by 0.8 percent during the week ending on June 12 compared to the prior week, but that was not nearly enough to offset the drop in the JLI by 29.3 percent, cumulatively, over the prior 2 weeks. The pace of new online job availability is slowing relative to its moving 52-week trend. (PDF file. Acrobat required.)

Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report
In the week ending June 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 296,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 312,000. The 4-week moving average was 295,750, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's revised average of 291,250. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending June 3, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate.

State Updates
Strong job growth and a comparable increase in the labor force held Washington State's unemployment rate almost steady in May, inching up just a tenth of a percentage point to 4.5 percent.

In Pennsylvania, the State House overwhelmingly approved an increase in the State minimum wage. The State Senate and Governor Ridge still need to approve the measure.

Integrity … What a Concept
Making the Grade? What American Workers Think Should Be Done to Improve Education, a Rutgers University-University of Connecticut study, reports that working Americans have strong views about the purposes of our schools and colleges, and rated them as doing a mediocre job. The survey finds skills, such as critical thinking and communication skills, and certain attitudes, such as a strong work ethic and individual responsibility, are more important than computer and specific occupational skills.
