June 13, 2000

Sinking Ships
Reel.com's plunge to the bottom and the troubled waters plaguing Petstore.com and Pets.com provide the backdrop for Ingmars Lindbergs' look at viability in the Internet Ocean.

The Agony
The New York Times on how the technology stock slump has not eased the manpower challenge.
(Registration required.)

The Ecstasy
The Boston Globe reports on the economic boom keeping workers and students in Massachusetts, and drawing transplants, especially from California.

The Parallel Universe
A study of what you would find if you studied what IT employers are looking for.

Benefits Update
Current information on domestic partner benefits will soon be available from the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute in a fact sheet entitled "Domestic Partner Benefits: Facts and Background, Updated June 2000."

Human Rights Campaign Fund database lists employers with nondiscrimination policies that include sexual orientation and employers that offer domestic partner benefits.

State of the Cities
is part of HUD's annual series that reports the most recent data on indicators of the social and economic vitality of American cities. It finds that as increases in the cost of housing surpass the rate of inflation, economic good times are paradoxically creating a housing crisis for many Americans. The economic growth that is pushing up employment and homeownership in most cities also is increasing rent more than one-and one-half times faster than inflation, and creating aggregate jumps in home prices as well. The analysis also shows threats to the quality of life due to land use consumption. The National Association of Home Builders responds on this, as does The Washington Post. (PDF file. Acrobat required.)

New Combinations
Monster.com has acquired privately held Simpatix Inc., an e-cruiting application service provider. The terms and conditions were not disclosed. Monster.com also recently reported it will be the exclusive career content provider on Inflightonline.com e-commerce marketplace during its pilot program scheduled to begin later this year.

Thomson Corp., the Toronto-based publisher of The Globe and Mail, has completed the sale of most of its U.S. newspapers in a two-part transaction worth $1.58 billion. USA Today publisher Gannett Co. will pay $1.125 billion for 21 newspapers in Louisiana, Maryland, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Community Newspaper Holdings, based in Birmingham, Alabama, is paying $455 million for 17 dailies in Indiana, South Georgia and West Virginia.

AtYourBusiness clients will use the Boxwood Technology Job Posting Manager to enhance services to its small business clients.
