Virus Alert
The FBI is advising computer users to not open any e-mail with a "Resume - Janet Simons" subject line, to deactivate the executive summary feature in Microsoft Outlook, and then delete the e-mail without opening it. The attachment is a Microsoft Word file called "EXPLORER.DOC" or "RESUME.DOC." The virus, dubbed The Killer Resume, is carried in e-mail and once opened, spreads itself to everyone in a user's e-mail address book. It also attempts to delete all Microsoft Windows operating system files, disabling the user's computer.
Herbie the Job Bug
Today's ERN takes a look at an old method of advertising, revamped, and considers the potential benefits to those who take advantage of the format before it grows stale.
Help-Wanted Advertising Index
The Conference Board's Help-Wanted Advertising Index rose to 88 in April, up one point from March. Over the past 3 months, help-wanted advertising rose in five regions and declined in four. Largest increases were in the Mountain (3.4 percent), West North Central (2.6 percent) and West South Central (2.2 percent) regions. Steepest declines took place in the New England (-16.3 percent) and Pacific (-10.4 percent) regions.
Small-Business Survey
According to the 19th annual Dun & Bradstreet Small-Business Survey, companies continue to report that attracting and retaining qualified and reliable employees is a significant concern, along with the problem of rising healthcare costs. In order to compete with large corporations in a tight labor market, many small business owners are apparently turning to benefits packages, but these come at a high cost. The survey also finds nearly 40 percent of small businesses have their own Websites, yet nearly 6 out of 10 say the Web has had no measurable impact on their businesses.
