Employment Cost Index
The Employment Cost Index for March 2000 was 146.5, not seasonally adjusted, an increase of 4.3 percent from March 1999, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The index measures changes in compensation costs, which include wages, salaries, and employer costs for employee benefits.
Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report
The U.S. Department of Labor reported that in the week ending April 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 283,000, an increase of 26,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 257,000. The 4-week moving average was 267,000, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 262,500.
