Job Hopping
A joint survey by careers.wsj.com and the Society for Human Resource Management found that HR professionals and job seekers nearly evenly agreed that the pursuit of higher compensation is the primary reason people change jobs frequently, and view job hoppers as lacking career goals.
New Combinations
AthenaOnline plans to deploy Jeeves Popularity Search and Jeeves Answers as the front-end to Ask Athena, a global knowledge network for training and knowledge management.
topjobs.net, the European Internet-based recruitment advertising solutions provider, and Prensa Espanola S.A., a leading Spanish publishing house, have signed a definitive agreement to form a joint venture to take Top Jobs on the Net into Spain and Portugal.
Global project marketplace eWork Exchange announced two new partnerships. Everypath, Inc. will provide wireless access to the eWork Exchange website and click2learn.com will provide professional and technical certification courses to eWork Exchange site users.
Check Out the Competition
DellEworks is Dell Computer's new small business site designed to provide a one-stop source for small businesses to establish an Internet presence and grow with online services, such as recruiting, training, market research, direct mail, and public relations.
CareerEngine's University provides access to career enrichment tools and professional development courses across the company's network of category-specific career search sites.
RecycleNet Corporation has added category-specific job listings on its web site.
TheStandard.com is offering two new services: JobShop, a recruiting service that allows users to perform criteria-based job searches, and VesterTester, designed to evaluate compensation packages.
The Employment Situation
Payroll employment rose in March and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.1 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Nonfarm payroll employment grew by 416,000 over the month, and included an estimated 117,000 temporary census workers. Also, it is likely that some of the March gain in payroll employment resulted from there being 5 weeks between the February and March survey reference periods instead of the usual 4 weeks. Average hourly earnings increased by 5 cents over the month and 3.7 percent over the
year.
