Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment
In January, 206 metropolitan areas recorded unemployment rates below the U.S. average (4.5 percent, not seasonally adjusted), while 118 areas registered higher rates, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reports today. Eleven metropolitan areas had rates below 2.0 percent, with five of these located in the South, four in the Midwest, and two in New England. Of the 11 areas with jobless rates over 10.0 percent, 7 were in California, and 3 were along
the Mexican border in other States.

E-cruiter.com clients now have access to Canadian online network Monster.ca, its newest job-posting destination.
Microsoft is reported to have agreed to invest $385 million to create a joint venture with Andersen Consulting to provide Internet services using Microsoft's Windows 2000. Avanade will hire more than 3,000 people with expertise in Microsoft software and plans to open offices worldwide.

Atlanta-based onlinehiring.com is a recruiting site that writes the ads, posts to multiple sites, personally screens all responses, and forwards the qualified candidates to its clients.

techies.com also hits television, radio, and the Internet advertising campaign trail with life as a techie.
JobTrak.com reports it has reached a major milestone by teaming up with its 1,000th university career center--The Tufts University Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy.
Transmeta, developers of mobile internet computing, will be using Catalyst Recruiting to fill entry- and mid-level positions. Catalyst maintains a profile database of information on college graduates and current students from Top 10 schools.

New research shows that humans have a sleep window for learning and memory that involves the interaction between two stages of sleep.
