Second Quarter 2000 Employment Outlook Survey
Nearly one in every three American companies say it will hire more workers in the upcoming second quarter, according to Manpower's hiring survey. Of the nearly 16,000 companies surveyed, 32 percent indicated plans for increased hiring in the second quarter (compared to 24 percent last quarter), 6 percent expected decreases, 58 percent foresaw no change, and 4 percent remained uncertain.
Help-Wanted Advertising Index
The volume of help-wanted advertising in major U.S. newspapers rose in January, according to the Conference Board, and indicated that the chances are good that the unemployment rate would dip below 4 percent this spring. The Index (used as a gauge of changes in job supply) rose to 89 in January from 86 in November. It was 92 in January 1999.
Finding Tomorrow's Best Workforce
If business location decisions are driven by the quality and availability of workers, those communities producing the best and brightest workers will be the big winners. One author suggests that businesses will find those communities by looking at its schools.
New Combinations
Dice.com has signed an agreement with Go2Net to exclusively provide the dice.com job-search engine and other content throughout Go2Net's computer and career channels.
BrightLane.com, a provider of services such as payroll and recruiting, will have the ability to post jobs and search the Headhunter.net resume database from its business center. BrightLane.com recently received a $19.5 million investment from First Union Corp.
US SEARCH.com, a public record information provider, will be the exclusive provider of pre-employment screening services integrated into QuickHire's online hiring management software.
Employment Publishing officially launched Employment911.com, a job-search site designed to enable job seekers to search more than 40 online career sites. Commtouch, an integrated email outsourcing service, will provide Employment911.com's registered users with services such as email.
Treasury Aims to Shut Tax Shelters
By issuing new requirements on the reporting of corporate tax shelters, the Treasury Department attacks those schemes that have allowed U.S. corporations to avoid billions of dollars a year in taxes. The new reporting requirements will be listed in an upcoming Federal Register.
