Gotta Get Smarter
In light of last week's "denial of service attacks" on major websites, John Sumser discusses the individualistic nature at the heart of the Internet versus the need to protect Ecommerce.
New Combinations
Adobe Systems enters the recruiting business with Adobe Job Connection, an online resource center that includes ePortfolio, where professionals can post work samples and resumes and features a co-branded career site with JobOptions.
BrassRing, Inc. has agreed to acquire the Westech Group of Companies, which will be merged into BrassRing later this year. Westech is a provider of Internet recruitment services and high-tech career fairs on the West Coast. BrassRing provides career fairs and Web-based hiring services in Canada, Europe, and the eastern half of the United States.
DevX.com has selected Career Central as its choice for executive Internet searches, providing DevX.com members with access to a network of over 800 hiring companies.
CareerEngine has a distribution partnership with JWT Specialized Communications, part of J. Walter Thompson advertising agency. The alliance is designed to expand recruitment advertising traffic across CareerEngine's network and provide JWT clients with a targeted base for job postings.
Vivant! Corporation announced an alliance with ComputerJobs.com that gives its users access to ComputerJobs.com's talent pool.
EarthWeb has acquired Cambridge Information Network in an $8 million cash/stock combination. EarthWeb also closed the acquisitions of two online certification preparation companies MeasureUp and CCPrep.
Human resource management outsourcing firm People Solutions closed a $1 million cash investment in its first round of financing from Sagemark Companies Ltd.
Grant to Train U.S. Workers
The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded $12.4 million in grants to train American workers for high-skill jobs in locations where companies are facing labor shortages in those fields. The grants are funded by a portion of the $500 fee that employers pay for each visa to import temporary workers from other countries. In coming months, the Labor Department will issue another $40 million in skills grants to communities around the country.
Updated and Ready
A recent online poll conducted by CareerBuilder found that 59 percent of employed job seekers are looking for something better. One in three described their boss as a "nightmare," while another 11 used the term "difficult." Long hours is another motivation--38 percent stated they worked at least 50 hours per week. Nearly half of all respondents have an updated resume ready to distribute at a moment's notice.
