Recruiting is Advertising
The changing conditions for Recruiting and Advertising, and the manner in which they are becoming similar is the subject of John Sumser's article in today's ERN.

Check Out The Competition
Direct Technical Placement based out of Texas and focused on employment in that state.

Primus Associates, a national executive recruiting firm specializing in hi-tech industry.

Casino Careers Online, an online employment recruiting service for the gaming industry.

Nursing Spectrum offers an Internet portal featuring an RN jobs database and a nursing search engine.

tecHound.com, an online and printed high tech career almanac for the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Interestingly, the print version can be found in one of the most heavily trafficked areas--local grocery stores.

Tipping the Balance
Hire.com announced it received TRUSTe's seal of security, ensuring that any information divulged to the Hire.com site is safe. One thinks there is a fine line between promoting self-interest and enlightened self-interest, leading to the question of which which side of the scale Hire.com tips.

Filling Unmet Needs
When developing your business online, Phil Clelland thinks you might want to ask yourself if you are meeting the needs of those who are visiting your site. You may not be the first one to meet this need but you may be able to do it better than anyone else.

Performance-Based Recruiting
The U.S. Army may cancel its 12-year contract with New York advertising agency, Young & Rubicam. The Army hired the Chicago-based consulting firm, Jones-Lundin Associates Inc., to help it select an ad agency for a new contract that would pay the agency based on how many recruits it attracts. One wonders what impact a recruiting performance-based contract may have.

Settlement Favors Illegal Migrants
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has settled the first lawsuit in which it sided with illegal immigrants who claimed discrimination by an employer. In the settlement reached last week, Holiday Inn Express Hotel and Suites in Minneapolis agreed to pay $72,000 to nine workers, all illegal immigrants from Mexico.

Why They're Considered The Best
According to data gathered by Hewitt Associates which analyzed the people practices data of more than 200 companies, the 100 Best Companies have three main characteristics in common. First they take more steps to engage employees in the business. Next, they make an effort to create a supportive and inclusive company culture and environment. Finally, they give greater consideration to their employees' quality of life.

Workplace Barriers
Despite efforts to break the so-called "glass ceiling" in the workplace, barriers to women in business persist in subtle ways that can be corrected, two researchers report in the latest issue of the Harvard Business Review.

BTM Market Report
It was generally a quiet day of trading. USD/JPY rallied from its European lows of 104.37, to trade back above the 105 level. The move was attributed to a London hedge fund buying decent size. Also, stops were tripped at the 105.20 level, and there was some profit taking and short covering involved. USD/JPY was able to maintain its gains above the 105 level for the rest of the day. EURO/USD held the 1.0215 support level, and was able to bounce off of it. It was only able to trade back to the 1.0250/55 level. There were some comments by ECB officials that were Euro supportive, but also included no need to hike interest rates at this time. The U.S. stock markets surged higher today on the news that AOL and Time Warner were merging, and on speculation that there will be other mega-mergers.

SIX WAYS NOT TO BUILD YOUR CAREER SITE

If a talented candidate dropped by your office, would you make her wait forever in the lobby, staring aimlessly at your company logo?

Would you demand her name, e-mail address, date of birth, current job and zip code before offering even the most basic information about your company? Would you force her to fill out complex applications just to find out if you're even hiring?

Of course not. You'd never do these things. No HR pro would--in real life.

But online, where nearly all potential hires begin their experience with your firm, many of us do all this and more. Maybe that's why 50 percent of all online job seekers describe the experience as unpleasant or frustrating.
