ERI Survey
John Sumser provides an overview of the upcoming 2000 Electronic Recruiting Index and invites those companies who have not yet filled out the 2000 ERI Company Information Survey to respond.

Initiatives Associated with Lower Market Value
Employee developmental training and 360-degree feedback programs, two initiatives widely applied by corporations, do not add to a company's economic value according to the consulting firm Watson Wyatt. In a study measuring the link between human capital practices and shareholder value, these initiatives were in fact associated with a decrease in market value .

New Combinations
PeopleSoft completes its acquisition of the Vantive Corporation, an independent supplier of customer-relationship management solutions.

Check Out The Competition
Diversity Search Partners is an executive search and career communications firm focused on attracting and developing minority candidates.

Right Management Consultants, a career transition and human resource consulting services firm, offers private consulting to outplace candidates through its site Right-From-Home.

RecruiTEK.com, a bulletin board of job postings.

CareerPath is staging a virtual job fair in February. In hopes of driving traffic, it will feature an ongoing chronicle of job seekers explaining the process of how they found jobs online. One thinks this may be an interesting way for recruiters to obtain feedback.

OSHA's Ruling
The Occupations Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently responded to a company's query regarding telecommuters. OSHA's response stated that companies that allow employees to work at home are responsible for Federal health and safety violations that occur at the home worksite. OSHA's decision covers millions of people, not only the estimated 19.6 million adult workers who regularly telecommute from their homes to their jobs, but also millions more who work at home occasionally -- even the parent who has to dash out of the office to be with a sick child and finishes a memo at home.

This announcement has caused a flurry of responses from telecommuters to industry associations to members of Congress. It is interesting to note that at OSHA's website the page displaying the controversial document can no longer be accessed...

BPR…for Recruiters
The emphasis on recruiting has created the need for a high-level reevaluation of the entire recruiting process, now known as BPR, Business Process Reengineering. One wonders who makes up these names.

In Search of Demographics and Niches
If you need demographics or market research to plan your strategy, The University of Texas' Advertising World site is a huge directory of Web advertising, ranging from account planning to Website promotion, and everything in between.

In a related story, online advertising network Adsmart is reported to be creating a network of sites offering advertising space specifically to reach customers in particular industry niches. Participants include emplawyer.net, lawguru.com, and patentcafe.com.

BTM Market Report
The market is still notably thin due to some major centers not yet open for the New Year, as well as caution over whether Y2K problems will arise on the first trading day. In these conditions, the Euro surged higher as it triggered small stops. What propelled EURO/USD higher were losses in the US bond and stocks markets as positions were unwound from Y2K fears. Also supporting the Euro were better than expected gains in German and French PMI reports. EURO/JPY followed EURO/USD higher. USD/JPY continued to trade in tight range, briefly dipping to the 101.40 level. The trend for USD/JPY still looks to be lower, with the market expecting to see improvements in Japan.

SIX WAYS NOT TO BUILD YOUR CAREER SITE

If a talented candidate dropped by your office, would you make her wait forever in the lobby, staring aimlessly at your company logo?

Would you demand her name, e-mail address, date of birth, current job and zip code before offering even the most basic information about your company? Would you force her to fill out complex applications just to find out if you're even hiring?

Of course not. You'd never do these things. No HR pro would--in real life.

But online, where nearly all potential hires begin their experience with your firm, many of us do all this and more. Maybe that's why 50 percent of all online job seekers describe the experience as unpleasant or frustrating.
